Maybe this will be helpful - maybe it won’t. Maybe it will just resonate with people who have received emails like this. I hope I don’t come off sounding like a jerk - I can’t control how you take this, but I’ll try to be compassionate in this blog.
I know that show business is hard to break in to. But I want anyone who isn’t in it - who wants in, to understand it’s ten times as hard to stay in. I mean it. If you do even the littlest thing - you run the risk of it failing, which is never good. Or even if it succeeds but doesn’t last long, people can forget you’re around and you have to re-invent yourself. You’re never “in” for good. This isn’t Skull and Bones.
Here’s my point. Don’t write letters to people you don’t know. Or do. I don’t know. But I know that for me, when I get random letters from complete strangers who want my help and are sort of…informing me of how the business works in their letters, it’s a turn-off but honestly I can’t do a thing for you anyway.
A lot of young people write me - I know I’m young too but I mean super young like just out of college. They write and say they want a job on the Daily Show or a sitcom or “they’ll take anything!” Oh good. Glad you’ll “take anything” - that’s what most of us do. So don’t get all “LOL” about your attitude because….it’s not charming. It shows how green you are and may even insult the reader.
Okay, hang on, I’m getting mean.
Why do these letters bother me? Inherently someone not knowing how things work doesn’t bother me. But it does tell me that when someone emails me because they want me to get them a job - they might have some entitlement issues. They might be part of a perfectly lovely comedy community already and not see it because they are not amongst famous people but they are amongst peers. Sorry. That’s who you have to come up with.
When someone writes to me that they want a job here’s a few things. I always need a job too. Secondly, I have friends who need jobs and I’ve known them for ten years or more and they will be first on my list to try to help. Thirdly, you can’t submit material without an agent or a manager and a stranger like me isn’t going to stick their neck out for you.
When I was starting out - I made friends with the other people starting out. Guess what? When good things happened to them, they shared the wealth. That’s how I got on the cartoon Home Movies. I was friends with those guys from the start and they knew what my voice sounded like.
I continued to be a newcomer when I moved to NYC - and I made friends with other various levels of newcomers there. We did stand-up and worked on our own projects and if someone got an agent - they’d recommend their other friends in the trenches to said agent, didn’t always work out….
So when you write me or others like me a letter saying, “Well…I’m writing this because it’s all who you know and it’s good to schmooze….” you’ve listened to your parents one too many times. The expression it’s “who you know” I believe means because you never know when your silly bearded friends are going to become movie stars. It doesn’t mean you contact people whom you don’t know - hoping to know them and then get something off them. Look around you - those are the major players of tomorrow. Don’t look to me - I’m stuck in my own outfield. We’re not on the same team. And I don’t mean that to be dismissive - or to say I’m better than you. I just mean, it’s not what you think it is - and hopefully enough people tell you that now so that you can calm down a little, enjoy it and do good work and rise up with your peers.
You may get lucky like a lot of my friends did and ‘make it’ right away but you have to be ready to not make it - and still love it and do it because you love it and if you’re really doing things out of love, the desperation subsides…and the form letters to people you’ve seen on TV stop. And your angry follow-up letter to the person you saw on TV who didn’t write you back won’t be sent. You owe yourself more than that…there is not quick track and maybe someone with a King-maker complex will help you, who knows? But beware of them too.
It’s not really “who you know” it’s that you should be who you are - however long that takes to find - and notice who the people are beside you the whole way.
Thanks to my Twitter pal @mesorandy for posting this.
You know, I am outraged that Elton and his partner have a kid - but only because Elton is 62 and should give his kid a chance in hell of actually having a living father around but he IS quite wealthy so at least his kid won’t be burdened with his elderly dad’s hospice bill once he gets out of college.
Anyway - Arkansas has ANOTHER reason they are outraged and if you ask me it’s “pretty gay.”
If you guys want to come see me FOR FREE perform in NYC - this Saturday night, Jan 15th on the John Oliver Stand-Up Show (being taped for Comedy Central) go to www.theblacklistnyc.com/johnoliver select “Show 2” & in pull down box put my name as a reference. Pass this on!!
These are the nuts that come out when innocent people die. They plan to protest the funerals of the kids killed in Arizona.
Honestly, must WE ALL get to have free speech? (Pithy question. Please, you don’t have to answer.)

I hope everyone is ready Snappy Kyle’s blogs. He’s a good dude with a conservative bent. We - I won’t even say disagree. We just have very clear ideas of our own.
Anyway - moving on thought I’d address something I saw on TV tonight re: the handouts that we’ve all been tricked into seeing SS and healthcare as: I just feel that #1 As long as Social Security exists and for example, I’ve been paying into for 21 years, I don’t want that money stolen from me.
My parents paid into it for 50 years and if it’s taken away from them, will they get all the money they paid into it?
GWB used some Social Security treasury and replaced it with IOU’s.
My problem with personal responsibility politics is that an individual American might not want “hand-outs” and when they see a politician who agrees - they’re on board. But some Republicans & Dems are not wanting to defund Social Security as a moral “no hand-out” policy - it’s to privatize it and make BIG money.
Secondly, nothing like Social Security is a hand out. We pay into it.
These programs GAVE America the middle class.
Lastly - national healthcare WILL NOT Bankrupt America. The lobbyists and corporatists and health care companies WANT this money - they want us paying insane premiums.
I get health insurance from the Writers Guild of America if I make a certain amount of money per year. I switched from my insurance that I got at the E! network. I had a one month lapse where I wasn’t covered. I was willing to pay for my own insurance and was told COBRA would be $1503 a month for my husband and I. We couldn’t afford it so went without insurance for a month.
Now am I lazy? Or not working or not pulling myself up? Nope.
Now national healthcare will SAVE the country money. There is much info on this.
Right now people are using emergency rooms. A sick nation and unhealthy nation (not filled with freeloaders) makes us weaker.
All I hear from militant types is that America is the greatest country in the world and if I don’t like it I can leave.
Okay, so let’s be the greatest country and have health care for all. We would all pay very little into it and we’d all be fine. If you got cancer or your parents did, you would not have to die because you can’t afford treatment.
This is for my blog friend Snappy Kyle and other Republican friends of mine.
I do not generalize re: Republicans. Or I do but I’m generalizing about Boehner and those in lock step with his ideals.
The people that voted the new crop of R’s in to the house felt that they were doing so because they want America’s economy running again because Obama ruined it.
I do agree that Obama is not helping much by adhering to destructive Bush policies but I’m not sure what the constituents would think if they actually knew that the people they voted in - want to make it hard for them to get their healthcare and in the future their Social Security. And lots of Dems are on board with this shit too.
But right now - I feel there is an ANTI-Republican streak in the R party - it’s been hijacked by people who are ANYTHING but conservative with our money.
Also - I agree. Most don’t care about us and the ones that do seem fringe and weird simply because we can’t even tell what honesty looks like anymore. Or the ones that are honest can’t seem to find their balls once elected to stand up to lobbyists.
In this day and age where corporations run the White House - I’m not even sure if we can use words like Democrat or Republican anymore because both parties (IN GENERAL) are one party: Corporatist.
GOP vows to undo what little of a healthcare plan we have (WITH NO PLAN OF THEIR OWN that isn’t just a giveaway to insurance companies)…they vow to roll state aid back to pre-stimulus levels cutting programs like EDUCATION, MEDICAID and TRANSPORTATION. They also vow to block environmental reform.
YOU voted for these people because you are fooled into thinking they are for your best interests and that they are just like you. THEY HATE YOU. So why don’t you stop hating yourself? You deserve to do real research. Turn off the Glenn Beck. You want a tea party? Have some Lipton and invite your girlfriends over. There’s your tea party.
WASHINGTON — Two House Republicans have cast votes as members of the 112th Congress, but were not sworn in on Wednesday, a violation of the Constitution on the same day that the GOP had the document read from the podium.
The Republicans, incumbent Pete Sessions of Texas and freshman Mike Fitzpatrick, missed the swearing in because they were at a fundraiser in the Capitol Visitors Center. The pair watched the swearing-in on television from the Capitol Visitors Center with their hands raised.
HEY DOUBTERS, I TOLD YOU! (re: John Edwards "Proposal")
I FUCKING CALLED IT. I said when Elizabeth died a few weeks ago…how long until John Edwards proposes to Rielle? I thought it would take less than 2 months. I WAS RIGHT. Boo to all of you who said my comment was in poor taste. Blame the man in poor taste. Not the semi-intuitive messenger. (me)
Holy shit. Moved to tears on this one. This is way more epic than when these guys did “Thriller.” I know I’m a year late on finding this video. THAT many people dancing in exact time in slow motion…incredible!
Dancing will save all of our souls! (Except Natalie Portman’s soul - hers will be punished for her terrible ballet technique in Black Swan. Phooey.)
Be good in prison guys. Keep dancing. Keep rehabilitatin’.
I know you kids like that Twilight stuff so I thought I’d stay relevant and re-post some vampire news.
After retreating from the Washington fray after getting a new heart pump in July, former vice president Dick Cheney is resuming something of his normal routine: hunting, socializing, and headlining events for Republican politicians. His doctors say the new heart pump, which assists his weak heart by pushing blood through his arteries, has saved Cheney’s life. But the famously decisive former VP faces one more hard decision: whether or not to pursue a full heart transplant. Heart pumps are usually used as a last resort or as a temporary solution ahead of a heart transplant. Cheney is almost too old to qualify for a transplant, so he has only a few months to decide.
My favorite line from the press release re: Sherri Shepherd’s engagement. “in the middle of a dish of Sherri’s favorite but forbidden M&M’s (she is diabetic), was a tiny little box,” the statement says. (Honey, although it appears I’m trying to kill you, I’m really asking you to spend the rest of your life with me. If you eat one of those candies, it will be your short life.)
**Also - if you’ll remember she said years ago that she didn’t know if the world was round or flat because she was too busy trying to put food on the table for her son. Maybe this new husband can help with that and Sherri can finally figure out that she can’t fall off the planet!
Hey - leading off this thanks is thanks to Snappy Kyle for the reblog of my meat post.
I wish had made more specific that I know not much of hunting and people who personally hunt to get their meat. My personal vegetarianism (worst album title) is to not participate in the meat industry - the fast food joints that deforest, the conditions the animals are in at slaughterhouses (not so much for “emotional” reasons but raising too many animals in small spaces usually points to use of hormones…)
ANYWAY I appreciate Snappy’s and others words that my post encouraged civilized debate. Because there is the animal rights vegetarian debate which I guess would condemn hunting - but my take is health, environmentalism and “other.”
Of course, while I doubt I could bring myself to shoot an animal, (bad aim, fear of guns, loud noises, guilt) I don’t ever want to take away anyone’s right do so. I stay far away from any argument that is purely based on “Well, what I WOULD do…”
But I do try to just educate a little bit when it comes to things that have been proven would help us all out a little bit - which is if you consume packaged, processed meat from chain grocery stores or fast food - being a little more conscious of it could do a world of good for everyone - your kids included.
But I say that not because I’m a comedian with a small following but because I’m a vegetarian with a blog. (Gross.)
Some of the comments in this article bum me out. I hate this macho attitude towards meat. And I hate this attitude that singers and other artists should shut up and not be political or socio-political. I’m sorry but most people I know who perform, it goes hand in hand with a deep compassion and need to serve. Especially people who earn so much - they want to give back. I don’t see comment trolls doing anything to help our environment, animals, or their fellow human’s health. This bully/macho attitude of “shut up and sing” and “fuck that I like meat” is sooo boring.
I read a book about deforestation when I was 14 and quit eating meat then and there. I had always wanted to be a performer but I also got this intense urge to be environmentally conscious. I tried to get my friends to do it with me but to no avail. Should I just “shut up and do comedy” and environmental causes are important to me? Why must people pick one thing and then shut up about the rest? Does anyone do that in real life? Do I say, “Hey accountant, shut up and do numbers, stop coaching your kid’s baseball team.”
Good for Paul McCartney - and he’s not even my favorite Beatle.
I'm In That 60%! Everyone Should Participate in their Democracy. ESPECIALLY in two wars. Pay up.
NEW YORK: Most Americans think the United States should raise taxes for the rich to balance the budget, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released on Monday.
President Barack Obama last month signed into law a two-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for millions of Americans, including the wealthiest, in a compromise with Republicans.
Republicans, who this week take control of the House of Representatives, want to extend all Bush-era tax cuts “permanently” for the middle class and wealthier Americans. They are also demanding spending cuts to curb the $1.3 trillion deficit.
Sixty-one percent of Americans polled would rather see taxes for the wealthy increased as a first step to tackling the deficit, the poll showed.
My husband just wrote this on his Twitter and to that I say, “Here, here!” (It’s not “hear, hear”, right?)
@neilmahoney “Fuck yeah DADT! Now you can fight and die for a country that doesn’t recognize your right to love one another. #touchofgrey#peedonparade”
I saw Obama do his press conference today. He’s so wrong I want to jump inside my TV and hang on to his big ears until they start to break a little - and THEN maybe he’d listen to me.
Gay marriage is a Civil Rights issue. Pardon MOI but I think it’s inexcusable that a half-black man who says he identifies as black due to the culture he’s most embraced, doesn’t get how DUMB he sounds saying that as President, man in charge, America’s Daddy - that he still thinks gays should only be allowed civil unions.
(By the way - I know when he ran for President he said that this was his belief. So I’m not acting like, “Where did this come from?” I hated it then and I hate it now. I figured since he has flip-flopped on everything else and given health insurance companies, big pharma, communications companies and the military industrial complex, everything they want - that maybe he has it in him to flip-and-flop to the gay marriage is the right thing to do side. Even as a political move. The log-cabin Republicans will push this forward before he does - I predict.)
He said on his press conference today that he has gay friends and co-workers (CONGRATUFUCKINGLATIONS - even if you DID NOT have these gay friends and co-workers, you should be able to see the “right” versus wrong in this.)
He said that they feel passionate about their right to marry and he’s going to “wrestle” with this some more.
Wrestle with this, Big O.
In North America, laws against interracial marriage and interracial sex existed and were enforced from the late seventeenth century onwards, and subsequently in several US states and US territories until 1967.
In the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century, many American states passed anti-miscegenation laws, which were often defended by invoking racist interpretations of the Bible,
Most white Americans in the 1950s were opposed to interracial marriage and did not see laws banning interracial marriage as an affront to the principles of American democracy. A 1958 Gallup poll showed that 96 percent of white Americans disapproved of interracial marriage. However, attitudes towards bans on interracial marriage quickly changed in the 1960s.
Let’s be on the right side of history this time. Let’s not be the white people from the 1958 Gallup poll.
Veteran diplomat Richard Holbrooke died yesterday and his last words before going into a 21-hour surgery that did not save his life were, “You’ve got to stop this war in Afghanistan.”
Obama admin officials downplayed his statements simply dismissing them as a “joke.”
Peace. What a joke.
Why don’t you give back that Nobel Peace Prize Obama?
Here’s what the Obama administration says is “the joke.” I see that it is part of a ‘banter’ type conversation but the man was serious about the message. I know how to interpret what I read. Luckily we are not all as stupid as O thinks we are.
"Administration officials said Tuesday that Holbrooke’s final words, "You’ve got to stop this war in Afghanistan," were part of a jovial back-and-forth with the medical staff.
"At one point, the medical team said, ‘You’ve got to relax,’" State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters on Tuesday, relaying what he said he had heard from people who were in the room with Holbrooke at George Washington University Hospital. "And Richard said, ‘I can’t relax, I’m worrying about Afghanistan and Pakistan.’ After some additional exchanges … finally [Holbrooke’s surgeon] said, ‘Tell you what, we’ll try to fix this challenge while you’re in surgery.’ And [Holbrooke] said, ‘Yeah, see if you can take care of that,’ including ending the war."
(**Again right-wing nuts don’t get excited. I’m not on your side. I’m a Liberal. You should actually love Obama. He’s doing a lot of what Republicans usually do.**)
A Twitter friend - or I guess ‘fan’ - did a really nice thing for me and six strangers. He chooses to remain anonymous. He’s never met me in person. He came to see a show of mine but we didn’t meet. He knows I’m trying to fill the house at my comedy album taping (this Saturday night 12/11 at 10pm at the UCB Theatre in Los Angeles) and he noticed that some fans of mine were bumming out because they couldn’t afford to come. (The UCB Theatre - runs on ticket sales and therefore, I can’t control the cost or anything like that. I don’t profit. I love performing there to support the theatre - as it’s always there for me to perform in! So it’s not a problem or a complaint.)
Anyway this lovely person purchased 6 tickets for some people to come see the show. It was a wonderful show of generosity towards strangers and regarding something so friviolous! I almost feel guilty. ALMOST!
I’m really touched. It’s so cool how the internet can be used for awesome connections like that. Dealing with the other side of show business - the actual business people who say, “No. You can’t perform here or there on our network or in our clubs…” it’s so nice to be able to use the internet to create your own ground swell and I love when people get behind the people they want to support. I try to do the same - I promise.
I HAVE SIX FREE TICKETS to my comedy album taping Sat Dec 11th at 10pm at UCB Los Angeles. A wonderful ‘fan’ and Twitter friend has PURCHASED FOR YOU GUYS 6 tickets. This person wrote me & said he saw a lot of broke people saying they couldn’t come. He wants you to be there & me to have you there! Please contact me on my Facebook like page http://www.facebook.com/JenKirkman or @jenkirkman on Twitter to get the tickets.
Here is a reprint from a letter from Senator Bernie Sanders (Ind- Vermont)
President Obama is right about one thing — Republicans in Congress are holding the middle class hostage.
We have a $13.8 trillion national debt, a collapsing middle class and the most unequal distribution of wealth of any major country. With all this in mind, Republicans in Congress say they will block tax cuts to the middle class and block unemployment benefits to more than two million families unless the President gives huge tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.
Their behavior is morally bankrupt. It is reprehensible.
But instead of challenging the Republicans for their absurd demands and their outrageous tactics, the President gave them virtually everything they wanted.
I cannot and will not support this deal. I will do everything I can to uphold the promise made to the American people to end the Bush tax cuts for the rich.
One of the most underreported parts of this deal is a cut to the Social Security payroll tax. In just one year, over $120 billion of revenue will be cut from Social Security under the President’s compromise plan, weakening the program and virtually guaranteeing benefit cuts in the future.
Make no mistake about it. Social Security has not added one dime to the national debt and this cut will only embolden Republican attempts to privatize the program and increase the age of retirement. Social Security is a vital safety net for all Americans and a cornerstone of our commitment to protect the middle class.
We are not alone in standing against this compromise. Republicans are holding the middle class hostage and the American people know it. I come from a small state and yesterday my office received more than 1,000 calls on this issue, with over 90% of them in opposition to this deal.
Last night, thousands of DFA members joined me on DFA Live where we had a lively discussion on this issue. One thing was clear to me during that call — DFA members nationwide want Democrats to stop this deal and fight for the middle class, working people, senior citizens and the unemployed while making sure that millionaires and billionaires are not given massive tax breaks.
Even with ridiculous amounts of tweets & Facebook updates & mentions on podcasts that go to thousands of people & retweets of this by legends - it’s just this hard to get 130 people to buy tickets locally, in advance. Hoping for a pre-xmas miracle. http://losangeles.ucbtheatre.com/shows/2587
Real smart move - Obama - freezing federal workers pay and ramping up to cave on extending Bush tax cuts. Yeah let’s give the TSA even less incentive to do a good job preventing bombs from getting on a plane. Overload them with new machines & pat downs and freeze their pay! I’m just glad the billionaires this xmas won’t suffer.
I won’t listen to my friends any more who say “Should Obama fix everything in a year?” I never said that. He should STOP with the bi-partisan crap and be a LEADER.
I can safely say I voted as a protest vote against a ticket with Palin on it. I never went insane believing in Obama’s message. I saw it coming like the way Danny Noonan watched the ball in Caddyshack as it teetered towards going in the cup. I KNEW HE WOULD BE THIS WAY. I tried to tell people -don’t get all excited. He’s not going to do what he says - when he shows you who he is listen! He’s picking Rick Warren to be in the inauguration ceremony - a symbol that says “fuck you” to gays but that he hopes looks more like a symbol of “tolerance” - tolerating the intolerant? Idolizing Lincoln rather than FDR - we never had a chance with this guy.
Don’t send me the What Obama Has Done So Far website. I saw it. Great, small changes.
We still need a leader who stands up to the wealthiest 1% in the country and who EDUCATES HIS CONSTITUENTS about how and why and what he’s doing - instead he chose to shame us by calling us “whine-y.” How DARE he. It’s proper to whine about him not taking a bigger stand on R’s wanting to dismantle Social Security, it’s proper to whine about his response time re: BP, it’s proper to whine when the poor get poorer, it’s proper to whine when he caves on environmental reform pissing off his colleagues like John Kerry, who have been in the game longer, it’s proper to whine when he ramps up a war he promised to end and our friends & family die over there, it’s proper to whine when he decides to not let other countries prosecute GWB and his gang as a war criminal and works with the GOP to squelch that overseas, it’s proper to whine when he can end DADT legally and constitutionally with the swoop of a pen and he waits for a congress that won’t move on it. It’s proper to whine when health care reform is promised and instead he caves on public option, does not educate the public to what it means, let’s tea party town halls rule the media air waves, is silent all summer about it and NEVER COMES BACK fighting, he let it die.
I’m going to keep whining.
And he better stop saying “folks”. I cringe every time.
