25. Framed Meme or Text Exchange – Print a text conversation or a meme you shared that made you both laugh or that was deeply sentimental. Put it in a little frame. It shows you treasure your shared history, and no one else is doing that- it’s such a good gift!

26. Jellies and Jams or Baked Goods – If you already have a reputation for making these items, people will be excited to receive them! Use your existing skills.

27. Custom Keychain or Framed Photo – These fall into the relationship-based, sentimental bucket. They are simple ways to celebrate your connection with that person.

Why Gift Giving Feels Overwhelming

Gift giving is supposed to be light and joyful, but for so many of us, it turns into an executive function triathlon!

We’re juggling decision-making, budgeting, planning, managing our time, and emotionally regulating all at once.

Plus, we’re trying to decode all those unspoken social rules:

  • How much to spend
  • Whether a handmade gift “counts,”

And hoping the receiver values the meaning behind the gift and not just the utility.

It’s no wonder our bodies literally start to panic because the stakes feel so high, and then we layer on perfectionism and people-pleasing, and that’s what steals our regulation.

So, here are some helpful tips you can try to make gift-giving easier:

Focus on Connection, Not Perfection – Reframe the goal. The gift doesn’t have to be perfect; the goal is simply to connect with the person.

Prioritize Personalization, Practicality, or Thoughtfulness – You don’t have to nail all three. Aim for one out of three, and remember that practicality and thoughtfulness far outweigh the cost.

Anchor to One Person and One Idea – Start small. Make just one decision for one person to get your brain in gear, and then use that gift as a template for others.

Use Gift Categories (Buckets) – Assign people to broad buckets- like Sensory Comfort, Practical Gifts, Fun, or Sentimental- instead of inventing a custom gift for everyone, turning it into a sorting problem instead of a creativity problem.

Use Microsteps – Break down the “Buy and Wrap Gifts” task into tiny, manageable steps on your to-do list, such as “Browse online for 10 minutes” or “Create time to wrap the gift.”

Shop During Dopamine Windows – Only attempt gift shopping when you naturally have energy (like a weekend morning with coffee), not when you are already depleted from a full day of work.

Opt Out of Exchanges – Give yourself permission to skip gift exchanges entirely! Suggest an alternative like grabbing lunch or coffee instead.

Give Late On Purpose – Make late gifts your brand! Give New Year’s or January pick-me-up gifts to take the time pressure off yourself during the holiday crunch.

Embrace “Good Enough” – Reduce perfectionism. Understand the “relationship harm myth”- people are happy that you thought of them, and an imperfect, late, or weird gift will not ruin a relationship.
