I Just Abandoned A Car, Walked Away
I LOVE THAT IT’S OKAY TO WALK AWAY
There are so many things that are supposedly designed to make life easier, but I’m like… this isn’t actually easier. I’m looking at you, QR codes for menus! Trust me, icebergs aren’t breaking off from ice shelves in the Arctic because of paper menus. And I’m talking about the worst thing to happen to society ever: ROOM SERVICE MENUS ON THE TV. Trying to navigate those menus with a remote that barely works, makes me want to trash a hotel room.
You’re pressing the button so hard and NOTHING. And then suddenly out of nowhere, it works too well, screens whiz by, and there goes the menu! Mario Lopez is suddenly all up in my face telling me about Must See Movies at a thunderous volume. Mario, I don’t care what movies are on this TV. It’s not like the remote is going to take me to them anyway!
But for every one of these innovations that somehow makes life harder, there are updated practices that blow my mind, like…
I finally did something I’d been deferring indefinitely.
RETURNING A RENTAL CAR
I can just pull up, leave the keys, and walk away. At first, it was a weird feeling, like I’m doing something wrong, fleeing the scene but it was totally on the up and up. Just bye, your problem now! I love it. No waiting around for someone to walk up to me with a clipboard, asking me personal questions like, “How was your trip?” or making me wait as they do The Walkaround™ surveying the outside of the vehicle trying to find a dent. Those days are over.
This is the kind of forward-thinking change that we need. I don’t need a rocket to space. *I need rental cars I can walk away from so I can catch my flight.
*Except for that one time that I forgot to return the car key, turned around to bring it back (like a total dork), and missed my flight.
